Student Diversity Census
The Student Demographic Data Project (SDDP) was launched by UBC to address the lack of demographic data needed to measure progress in equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI). By collecting self-reported data on factors such as ethno-racial identity, gender identity, disability, and socioeconomic background, the project helps identify and address systemic barriers to student success. The SDDP aligns with UBC’s broader commitments, including the Strategic Equity and Anti-Racism Framework (StEAR). It followed a collaborative and research-driven approach, incorporating insights from surveys, literature, and external guidelines while engaging students, faculty, and staff.
Students expressed concerns about transparency in demographic data collection, emphasizing the need for clear language, inclusive response options, and reassurances about data usage and protection. They were more comfortable providing information when they understood its purpose and benefits. Given the complexity of identity, UBC prioritized sensitivity, flexibility, and intersectional analysis in data collection.
The Student Diversity Census (SDC) officially launched in September 2024 after a 2023 pilot. Students received unique links to complete or update their responses, with all data securely stored under UBC’s Data Governance Program. Participation is voluntary, with a “choose not to disclose” option. The census informs policies, student support services, and equity initiatives, with ongoing access for updates.
